The Lions Club of Newlands was originally formed because of a general level of discontent by a motly group of Lions in a number of existing clubs was getting frustrated with having to spend Saturday mornings either shaking cans for donations or running book sales in order to raise funds to assist the community at large.
These members felt that more could be done by using their collective knowledge to do things differently. And so the idea of a new Lions Clun was borne. And the name you may ask? Since a number of other suburbs had been taken and the fact that Newlands was still available, coupled with the fact that the club logo would be reasonably easy to create, the Lions Club of Newlands seemed an obvious choice. And so it was!
And where would meetings be held? Welllll, this used to be a difficult situation. Over the years a variety of clubs and pubs served as “home”. And as the club grew in numbers of “warm” bodies the venues became more and more of a problem.
Today we call home the facility we have at the Maths and Science Institute on Firgrove Way close to the intersection with Spaanschematriver Road in Constantia.
A venue with secure parking, lovely clubhouse with a fitted kitchen, ladies and gents ablution facilities and above all our own “pub“!
Unfortunately to many “long draaaaawn-out” meetings mean we get to spend very little time in the “pub”.
